Hello world, I'm Jimmy

I've been on the internet since the 1990s. Owning my own website was something I never thought I would have until the last year. Now I actually have my own domain with my name on it. It feels kinda weird but also awesome that this space is entirely mine.

A little about myself

For some historical context, I never thought of being a software developer despite being on the computer for huge chunk of my life. I was fortunate to have play around with a computer since Windows 95, 98 and 2000. My mom was trying to get into the IT field at the time, but unfortunately wasn't able to start her career in it. I grew up playing games on my computer (as well as consoles), such as MapleStory, RuneScape, and a bunch of other free to play games.

Fast forward to the end of high school, where I'm faced with needing to decide a career path, I picked a Commerce program at my local university. Didn't like it, dropped out, and wondered what to do with my life. Then I decided to try to make my hobby of games into a career with game development. Went to a college for a game development program in Toronto. This is where I exposed myself to programming for the first time. I didn't apply myself during this time, dropped out, and ended up burnt out of gaming for like six months. Next, I decided to go into the HVAC field, worked in it for 3 years and I was burnt out from working long hours, outside on the hottest and coldest days of the year, while putting my body through the wringer. I was miserable. There were some things that I could've definitely done better if I had the mentality I do today, but I don't think I would've physically lasted in that career with the injures I racked up.

I went back back to retail jobs just to get by, and when I tore my rotator cuff in my last job, it was last straw where I knew I needed a different career path away from physical labour. That was in December 2023, and when January 2024 rolled around, I applied to a few colleges for their software/programming programs.

Why software development?

You might be wondering why am I going back to programming when I tried it earlier with game development. One thing I learned about myself while I was in HVAC was that I liked to problem solve. I like to know how things work, and how to fix them when they are broken. I didn't want to do physical labour anymore and the first thing I could think of was something in the IT field, but not help desk positions. I wanted to create stuff this time.

As of the time of writing this, I'm currently at the end of my 2nd year in SDNE @ Sheridan College. Initially, I wanted to re-create a portfolio page I made and leave it at that, but I decided to make it more personal.

I never made a blog before but I always write down what I'm thinking in a journal. It helps clear up my head when I feel like I'm thinking too much or start feeling anxious about something. Now for the real question for this blog.

What am I going to be writing about?

I'm definitely going to be writing about more personal stuff, such as my favourite things, like shows, anime, games, etc. I also definitely will make a post about being diagnosed with sleep apnea and life after treating it.
